The Spoerl Fabrik - A Place with History

Built in 1904, the J.H. Spoerl Machine Factory once belonged to the father of Düsseldorf author Heinrich Spoerl, best known for his novel “Die Feuerzangenbowle”, which gained fame through the film adaptation starring Heinz Rühmann. The factory produced machines for the paper-processing industry.

At the entrance of the restaurant, you’ll now find two black-and-white portraits of Heinrich Spoerl. These were gifted to us by his daughter-in-law, Inge Spoerl, at our opening in 1993.

After an elaborate restoration by Düsseldorf architect Piet Neiser, the old factory—along with the gatehouse villa and the former coach house—was brought back to life in 1993. The space was transformed into a vibrant home for creatives, a restaurant, and a bar.

The idyllic garden, featuring outdoor seating and artworks by Anatol (a student of Joseph Beuys), along with the historic buildings and their antique furnishings from Belgium and France, Art Deco chandeliers, and the original bar counter from Paris’ Marché aux Puces, provide a stunning setting for exceptional birthdays, festive Christmas parties, lively summer events, and unforgettable weddings.

A truly special place for special occasions.

It’s no surprise that in 2013, scenes from the film “Adieu Paris”—starring Jessica Schwarz and Sandrine Bonnaire—were shot right here.
